May Playlist 2020

I think we can all agree the one constant in our lives this year has been music – where would we be without it? – and May just might have been my favourite month so far.

I feel like May was the month when everyone started to somewhat settle into lockdown life and artists were back on track with releasing music, which for us, meant single releases everywhere we looked AND the resurgence of dance floor Gaga. (I may not keep my cool here…) there was just so much joy to be found in music and I can’t wait to talk about it so what are we waiting for? Let’s get started… *dances my way into Summer*

Album

Lady Gaga – Chromatica

Here she is, the rightful queen of the dance floor reigns again! Yes, after her musical detour of the stripped back Joanne/A Star Is Born era, Gaga returns to the dance pop genre with Chromatica.

Chromatica is a concept album that brings us into a world of colour, freedom and powerful dance anthems that will, well, make you want to get up and dance. It’s a far cry from the harsh reality of 2020 and perhaps provides us all with the escapism needed in these uncertain times.

There is a lot of strength and healing within Chromatica – just listen to the tracks Alice, Free Woman or 911 – and I am so glad that Lady Gaga has overcome her difficult life struggles to now be at the stage of feeling like she can dance freely once again. To me, Chromatica is reminiscent of the Born This Way era – which is possibly one of my favourite albums – and I love that.

I have included three of my favourite Chromatica tracks (which were actually quite hard to choose as it changes all the time) in my playlist below.

Singles

Jonas Brothers & Karol G – X

Did I hear someone say Summer? Because that’s exactly what arrived with the release of the Jo Bros & Karol G latest single X. It probably comes as no surprise when I say I was instantly hooked to another JB tune BUT how can you not listen to this feel good track and exude joy? This pop-dance number with aspects of rumba is the perfect fun & fiery tune to play a part in your Summer evening soundtrack.

Gavin James – Boxes

In May, Boxes was the latest musical offering from Irish singer-songwriter Gavin James. Boxes is a cheery little track that promotes the message of not listening to anyone else but yourself and reaching for your dreams. Throughout the song, Gavin’s lyrics reveals his time of growing up within a rule stricken school focused on one way of life when all he wanted was to pursue his dream in music. It gives us a sense of staying true to yourself, no matter what anyone says and focusing on how you want to live your life. I absolutely love the message behind this song and it’s definitely one to listen to if you’re in the need of a pick me up on a bad day.

The Coronas & Gabrielle Aplin – Lost in The Thick Of It

Sending a little love to the unfortunately named Coronas (they had the name before the virus 😆 ) as they released their gorgeous duet with English singer-songwriter Gabrielle Aplin. Originally written for Aplin during a writing session, Coronas frontman Danny loved the song so much he suggested adding his own vocals and making it a duet. The result? A stunning track on resilience and vocals that gel so well together you’d automatically think it was destined to be a duet. I found myself singing along from the first listen and that hasn’t changed, I can see, or rather hear why Danny fell for it the way he did.

This is May…
