Volunteering at Kilkenomics 2019

Hey, everyone! Welcome to, or back to my blog 😊

As you might have guessed, I am talking about volunteering today. Just two weeks ago, I found myself in Co. Kilkenny volunteering at Kilkenomics 2019. Kilkenomics is the world’s first economic and comedy festival, and the aim of this is to make economics more accessible to the general public through the art of comedy, which is something it does very well.

I first volunteered at Kilkenomics in 2015 and I had no doubt that I would go back again this year now that I had the chance.

I don’t know if it’s luck or what but at any time I have worked at a festival in Kilkenny, – which is a few now – I have been surrounded by the best people. The venue managers and fellow volunteers have been super, easy to get along and work with and to be honest, so have the performers and contributors to the shows too.

I started the day in St.Canice’s Cathedral, which is quite a picturesque setting for a show, both inside and out! I believe over 500 people managed to slot into the venue on that Autumn afternoon and as I stood at the door greeting and taking tickets I felt the rush of each one of those 500 people and I was well and truly caught up in the festival buzz.

Off to Watergate theatre I went then and my God, is that a little gem of a venue! It’s one of those theatres, that because it’s so intimate, you feel close to the stage regardless of where you are sitting. The show here is one that sticks in mind because after my volunteering duties were over and the audience had taken to their seats, I had the opportunity to sit back and listen to Samantha Power and Betsey Stevenson speak about their time working in the White House alongside Obama, which was a real treat.

Overall, it was a great experience to be apart of again. The shows are quite thought provoking and meeting/chatting with people as they come through the venues can be a lot of fun. If only I could have stayed around longer than the one day!

Have you given up or would you consider giving up free time to volunteer at a festival? Do you have any stories to tell about working at festivals? Let me know in the comments below!
