August Playlist 2019

August, where do we start with you?! With singles from Miley Cyrus, a breakout hit from a former Fifth Harmony member and Taylor Swift’s long awaited seventh album, August has been a strong contender for the music month of Summer.

Album

Lover – Taylor Swift

Swiftie or not, I believe we were all waiting to see what ~hashtag~ TS7 had in store and when TS7 was finally revealed as ‘Lover’ we knew we were in for something special.

August 23rd was the day, and social media was awash with declarations of love for Taylor’s latest musical offering and I was no different. I fell under the spell of ‘Lover’ and I still haven’t recovered.

To me, Lover is a more grown up version of everything that makes Taylor Swift great. Lover is an album in which past and present relationships and old memories are discussed. With a nod to her country roots and current pop status, many of these tracks will take you back to albums of Swift’s past but with a fresher feel.

Although I love every track on the album here are the four stand outs that I managed to separate from the rest.

  • Forgot That You Existed – A sassy little number on getting over a toxic relationship/friendship.
  • Lover – A modern country ballad in which Taylor professes her love for a partner (assumingly about her current boyfriend Joe Alwyn) I picked this single as a stand out for me because it is so reminiscent of Taylor’s 2008 hit ‘Love Story’ and the feeling of familiarity and nostalgia were real.
  • Paper Rings – A fun pop song on how true relationships aren’t based on material things and Taylor confessing she would marry her boyfriend in a heartbeat even if it was with paper wedding rings.
  • Soon You’ll Get Better – An emotional acoustic driven country ballad featuring The Dixie Chicks, Soon You’ll Get Better is about Taylor’s mother and her cancer diagnosis. It is a stunning song that will stop you in your tracks, as you prepare to wipe away the tears and a fitting way to close the album.

Singles

Slide Away – Miley Cyrus

In July, the news broke that one of our (okay, my…) favourite celebrity couples agreed to split. Yep, after just under a year of marriage, Miley Cyrus and Liam Hemsworth were no more. In light of this, Miley did what Miley does best and released a hard hitting single to break our hearts all over again.

In Slide Away, Miley gets to grips with the breakup of her marriage, reminiscing over old memories while trying to let go of a life she’s known for the guts of 10 years.

The pair have been together since their mid/late teens, but now as the two have grown up and grown apart it’s time for them to move on.

As emotional as Slide Away is, it’s one of my most favourite songs right now. It’s raw and it’s real, and as Miley showcased at the year’s VMAs, it’s a song capable of a beautiful performance. It brings to us the end of an era as one of the biggest celebrity couples of my generation have well and truly closed the chapter.

Not In Love – Running Lights

Earlier this month, a band called Running Lights approached me on Instagram to check out their latest single as a suggestion for an upcoming playlist. I said I would, and as a woman of her word, I checked into Spotify to see what ‘Not In Love’ had to offer.

In all honesty, having not previously know about Running Lights, I didn’t know what to expect, and upon learning that they were a pop/rock trio, I thought this single would be right up my street, and do you know? It was! Not In Love was actually the perfect addition to a late Summer playlist, it’s an upbeat, catchy pop tune that would have any playlist rockin’. It’s an ear worm, in the best way possible and I dare you to listen without singing along!

Motivation – Normani

Things may have been heating up between Camila Cabello and Shawn Mendes this Summer but it looks like there’s more room for another Fifth Harmony breakout. This month saw the first solo single without a featured artist from the former Fifth Harmony member, Normani, and boy, is it a whopper of a tune! Co-written by the pop princess, herself, Ariana Grande, I feel like you couldn’t turn to any radio station without hearing Motivation towards the latter half of the Summer and I was totally okay with that because just as the title suggests, it is a super fiery and motivational track that I couldn’t get enough of!

This is August…
